Chainmaille Jewelry
We finished our D’ArtShop sessions with a bang and a BLING! Gail did a wonderful job! She provided a huge array of colored jump rings and provided the findings. Everyone manipulated their rings into perfect alignment to produce the looks they desired, leaving with at least two pair of earrings. Note the two modeling a pair of their creations in the images. :-)
Drawing for Real
We really had a fast paced class. There was so much to do with so little time. However, I was so impressed by everyone in attendance. You hung in there with me and we got through several key foundational exercises that will hopefully encourage you to create your own still life! The drawings created today were exceptional for our first drawing lesson...

Paper Casting
Paper Mosaics
Do you see how much fun everyone was having cutting out tiny pieces of decorative scrapbook paper to use for their mosaics? Although some don't look too happy, they were busy cutting carefully in order to fill their desired mosaic design. Because of our Annual Challenge Presentations we didn't have time to finish, but we hope to share some of the finished pieces next month!

Monoprinting
In our monoprinting lesson, instructions were given for two different printing methods. We created watercolor prints on acrylic sheets and acrylic prints using gelli plates. For the watercolor prints images were painted onto the sheets, left to dry and then positioned and burnished onto wet watercolor paper. For the gelli prints small amounts of acrylic paint were rolled onto the plate with a brayer and mixed media paper was positioned on the plate and smoothed over using slight hand pressure. Decorative affects were also done to some of the gelli plates with combs and cut paper. Hopefully, this introduction will lead to bigger and better things!

Needle Felting
Everyone had a ball on their needle felting adventure! Using images of owls and an introduction to needle felting tools and processes, each person created their own little owl. The little felted owls were fun to make and obviously brought everyone joy! These are indeed the most adorable owls you'll ever see. Each one is unique and beautiful!

Alcohol Ink Techniques
Exploring unique ways to use colorful alcohol inks on yupo paper and ceramic tiles made for a wonderful adventure. Various tools and techniques were used to create a wide variety of examples. From landscapes magically appearing after several applications of ink across the paper to creating vibrant little star bursts achieved by blowing on the ink through a straw, it was an exciting time for all. The results were outstanding! Several were able to apply an acrylic gloss to their tiles after they were dry.

Pastel Exploration
Members used vibrant pastels to try a few techniques and within seconds started creating wonderful, playful and creative works of art. Various supplies were presented to use with the pastels and by far the favorite tool was bread, which was used to remove pastel applications where needed. Everyone enjoyed the soothing forgiving medium and had lots of fun...smiling faces proved it was a big hit!

Monochromatic Still Life
In keeping with a traditional still life art lesson, we painted objects from real life onto canvases. To create our monochromatic paintings, we mixed light and dark values of acrylic paint to match the light and dark areas of the objects being painted. Everyone saw the objects from different angles, giving each piece its own look.

Mini Metal Embossed Art
Using metal foil tape sheets we created our metal embossed art on canvas panels. We glued shapes, letters, metal strips of words and/ or art to the canvases. Next the foil sheets were applied and smoothed over the decorated surface. Some added black acrylic paint and/or alcohol ink(s) to their embossed art. Everyone jumped right in to give it a try and all of the designs were unique and creative. In a short period of time we created quite a collection of metallic beauty! |
Marbling
As a part of our Bookmaking series of lessons we marbled our own paper. Everyone had fun experimenting with a variety of techniques to create stunning color movement on the surface of water. It was fascinating to watch each person create. Toothpicks, paperclips, combs and other tools were used to move the fluid designs until the right design was achieved. Then quickly the paper was places on top of the water and removed after a few moments of resting. It was magical!

Pinch Pots
Using self hardening clay we created decorative pinch pots. Starting with a ball of clay we formed our small pots and decorated them by incorporating embossed, carved or impressed designs. We left enough clay at the bottom of the forms to carve out a cylindrical foot, which provided a professional touch. We got a little dirty but it was worth it.

Watercolor Techniques
The purpose of this lesson was to create little samples of 9 watercolor techniques. We used masking tape, crayon, masking fluid, salt, plastic and alcohol to produce different outcomes with the paint. Wet on wet, gradation and regular washes were also explored. The samples were created on watercolor cards to be used as a reference for future applications.

String Art
The string art lesson was a bangin' success in more ways than one. We had our hammers, nails, string and boards to work on. The designs were put on paper, placed on the boards and then the nails were hammered along the lines of the drawing. Everyone was careful but there was definitely a lot of concentration while the sound of nails being hammered into wood took place by all. After the wood and nails were spray painted the stringing took place. Three techniques, random, crossover and fan were discussed and demonstrated. The results were amazing!

Silk Painting
Silk hoops were the foundation for these beautiful silk designs. Using clear silk resist we created the designs on each hoop. The clear resist confined the silk paint to areas where it was desired while painting the designs with a brush It also served as an outline of the drawing once the resist was rinsed away, done after the hoop was heat set. Some used salt in the silk paint to create starburst affects! The final results were unique and colorful.
